In #wearecircet we introduce both the new recruits and seasoned professionals in our team.
Meet Abdullah Ulgar
✔️ Function: Field Engineer Smart Meters
✔️ Employed since: summer 2022
✔️ Active in: the Lommel/Beringen region, and also across Limburg and Antwerp
👉 How do you help build the infrastructure of tomorrow?
“I install smart meters in people’s homes. These meters enable you to see exactly how much energy you use, better plan when to turn on certain appliances, and identify more easily the consumption of devices in standby mode. Less waste and more money in your wallet, isn’t that a good thing?”
👉 What is your main task?
“Installing the meters is my main task: I install an average of eight a day. However, I think it’s equally important to get people excited about their new device. When they see how easily they can save energy with it, they quickly get on board.
I therefore like to point out additional features to customers, such as the option to monitor their consumption via their smartphone or tablet. This message resonates with both younger and older generations: everyone has a smartphone these days, and most customers think it’s fantastic to be able to easily view their energy consumption online.”
👉 Which challenges do you face?
“Some people aren’t so eager to have a digital meter installed. Then, it’s our job to convince them of the benefits and reassure them that the meter will be installed correctly.
We also have to handle more difficult jobs, for example when dealing with elderly people who live in an old house. There, we sometimes only find a small recess where we can install the meter, and have to run longer power cables or even drill. But when it works out, the residents are even more satisfied.”
👉 What do you like most about your job?
“Doing a nice job really gives me energy. I want people to be satisfied when I close the door behind me after the installation. I also like the chat before I start work: it’s how I share my expertise and reassure people. As soon as they realise that I have plenty of technical know-how, they trust me a lot more.”
👉 Which tip would you give a Circet newcomer?
“For young people in my role, I would say: preparation is half the battle! First, create a safe working environment. Then, look at the cabinet and the place where the meter should be installed, and determine how you can carry out the work in a neat way. Field Engineers who are just starting out tend to rush into a job. So: think first and then you’re off to a good start.”
