Sustainability is a multifaceted concept: our code of conduct, our Circet4Communities volunteer programme and our actions to reduce our carbon footprint are all sustainable initiatives. We build our sustainability policy on the basis of SDGs, i.e. sustainability objectives defined by the United Nations. ESG Coordinator Kyani Van den Eede and Head of Business Transformation Patrick Block explain how SDGs shape Circet's sustainability policy.
What zijn SDG's? The SDGs – short for Sustainable Development Goals – are 17 sustainability goals set by the United Nations. They encompass themes such as society, the environment and prosperity: good quality education, forest management and decent work, for example. These goals are the inspiration for sustainability policies, whether for governments, companies or individuals. |
Why are the SDG's relevant for Circet?
The SDGs are a framework for our sustainability policy. “As an organisation, this allows us to contribute to a better world,” says Patrick. “However, we also need to be realistic and understand that we cannot focus on every one of these 17 objectives of course. We have to make choices.”
“By incorporating these goals into our sustainability approach, we speak the same language as our customers and investors. They, too, often work on the basis of SDGs.”
How do we translate SDGs into concrete actions?
Circet’s sustainability policy rests on three pillars:
“We can link quite a few of the 17 SDGs to these three pillars,” Kyani explains. “With regard to our natural environment, just think about the trees we plant in collaboration with GoForest. Or the switch to an electric fleet.”
“Well-being is also one of the key points of our approach,” Patrick continues. “This applies to colleagues as well as to everyone they come into contact with on site. As a result, we invest in training and safety for everyone who works at Circet. But our aim is also to have an impact locally, by laying infrastructures for the future and giving colleagues the opportunity to volunteer during their working hours.”
“Finally, there is the link with the Circet values,” Kyani says. “Our Code of Conduct – and the code specific to suppliers – sets the guidelines for our ethical decisions. We also communicate clearly about our whistleblower portal, and in doing so, we comply with the obligation to give every employee the opportunity to report issues. All cybersecurity investments also contribute to safe working procedures.”
How do I recognise an SDG initiative?
You can identify SDGs by the colourful squares containing a number. From now on, we will include these icons in our communications, so that you can recognise sustainability initiatives.
“Employees can access the ESG intranet for more information,” Kyani adds. “In addition, there is also an ESG working group in which colleagues monitor all sustainability projects in our organisation.”
